Greeting fellow South Africans,
Projects such as Young People at Work plays a vital role in distinguishing different types of job creation opportunities and promote job creation that creates the most social impact. The scourge of unemployment (and all the social ills that stem from it) has claimed our youth and their potential for too long. My message to every young person is: “Create your own wealth and start as soon as possible…and as a South African abroad I discovered the universal language is no longer English…its hard work!” You are in good hands…the mentors you have within YoungPeopleAtWork all either had a mentor too or suffered the lack of having one….they have the passion and commitment to see you make it…do your part! To the trustees and board of YoungPeople@Work….I salute you and you have my unwavering support. (Dawn Malotane Lindsey, Ohio, USA, Co-founder, People First Foundation)
After 18 years of democracy South Africa remains sharply divided along racial and class lines. South Africa is one of the world’s most unequal societies and the gap between rich and poor is widening. South Africa has one of the highest rates of unemployment in the world and young people are the worst affected. Young people from working class communities still struggle to finish school, let alone have the opportunity or resources to further their studies or enter the job market. The formation of YoungPeople@Work provides hope for the many hopeless young people of Bishop Lavis and the surrounding areas. It is driven by young people for young people. Not only will it take them away from their daily struggles ie drugs, gansterism and poverty, it will also provide them with tools to adapt to the current state of affairs. I pledge my full support to this newly launched initiative.
I joined a youth organisation (RAG) in Bishop Lavis at the age of 14 that Frank initiated. I was exposed to many opportunities and skills which changed by life forever. I want every young person to get the same opportunity and positive that YoungPeople@work will realise this dream. (Soraya Mentoor, Director, The Wheat Women's Trust)
